April 22-23, 2011 Highway 79 Lake Co. TN I'm still crunching totals but here are a few of the birds photographed off flooded 79. On Saturday, I was joined by Glen Criswell and slowly through the day, we were able to relocate the birds I had seen on GOOD Friday. Of the 18 species of shorebirds, NINE HUDSONIAN GODWITS topped the list, WILLET, Sanderling, Wilson's Phalarope, 22 B-n Stilts, 19 G-Plovers, 1 B-b Plover plus 2 breeding plumaged LAUGHING Gulls and a super cute, breeding FRANKLIN'S, plus finally late Saturday, 2 Forster's and a Caspian Tern. Thanks to the 23 Bald Eagles (11 in one tight group fighting over a particularly tasty fish), one persistent Peregrine, an Osprey plus a Harrier for keeping the pot stirred. By late Saturday, the water had risen least 6" more, covering most of the good feeding islands. I had driven out a mile on the flooded road on Friday but this was no longer possible on Saturday. The Mississippi is to rise another 3 plus feet at Tiptonville this week and a lot of the birds had moved on but still huge numbers of Legs were present when we left at dusk. I'll finish some tallies for the 3 counties and may post them later. But now, out to look for Easter Goodies. Good Birding!! Jeff R.
