January 22, 2008 Montgomery County A total of 5 Great horned owls were heard calling yesterday in the county. Yesterday evening (~5:15pm) I checked out a field on Fort Campbell looking for Short-eared owls. No Short-eareds were seen, but I did hear 2 Great horned owls dueting in the loblolly pine stand north of the field. I also heard 1 American woodcock "peenting" and saw 1 female Northern harrier coming in to roost. Last night around 11:00pm while walking the dog in the icy, full moon conditions I heard 1 Great horned owl hooting in the large elm tree in my back yard and heard 2 other Great horneds responding in the distance.
