Afternoon listers... Steve and I finally made it to the Duck River Unit yesterday in New Johnsonville. The weather was cloudy with temps in the upper 50's but it was a great day for birding. We saw 57 different species. Highlights included: all the Geese...Greater White-fronted, Cackling, Snow, Ross's and Canada. We had both Lesser and Greater Scaup. American White Pelicans, Savannah, Song, Swamp, White-throated and White-crown Sparrows as well as 8 immature eagles. We also had the opportunity to watch two Northern Harrier's hunt and ultimately perch (on the ground and on a bush) and get really fantastic looks through our scope. But by far the biggest volume of birds was a mixed flock of blackbirds...we figured it numbered easily near a 250,000 birds. They were flying back and forth, back and forth from trees lines on both sides of the main road. The skies filled with them and their calls could be heard all over the refuge. It was amazing to watch and hear. Water levels are still very low but we have noticed that in the last month due to snow melt and the refuge pumps that there is standing water in places it had not been. We will be leading a field trip over there on February 19th for the Warioto Audubon Chapter here in Clarksville. Anyone who'd like to join us is more than welcome. Just shoot me an email and I'll send you details. Have a great week. And as always, Happy birding, Steve and Cyndi Routledge =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
