I made part of the rounds on Douglas and Cherokee Lakes
making a loop around Jefferson Co. Saturday in hopes of
finding those Long-tailed Ducks Frank and Sharon had
at Cherokee Dam last weekend. No luck on those but I
did find a good-sized float or two of divers and 7000+
gulls there.

Highlights were about 30 Common Goldeneyes which may be
more than all I've ever seen put together and 3 White-
winged Scoters. I was there from about 4-6 pm and birds
were actively diving and feeding making it difficult to
keep good numbers (plus most were over 1 mile away on
the other side of the lake). Two large floats, one
directly across from the dam seen from the top of the
dam on the Grainger Co. side (see Frank's directions)
which had the largest variety. The scoters and all but
one of the Goldeneyes were seen from the boat launch
just past (as in about 10 feet past) the turn to the
top of the dam (where the Red-necked Grebe was a few
years ago). They were nice and close for some really
nice views.

Ring-billed Gulls were everywhere. Close to 1000 feeding
below the dam, 300 on this island, 200 on that one, ...
and a good 5000 or so at the mouth of Mossy Creek. Other
than 100 or so Bonaparte's Gulls, that's the only species
I could pick out, but from the dam, those at Mossy Creek
were just a big bunch of white birds about 2 miles away.
