Just moments ago (12/1/2011, around 12:15 p.m.) I had a spectacular look at first year Golden Eagle right over our house in western Lewis County. The bird circled low, as low as about 40 m, and directly overhead at times. Quite a show in the bright sun. A kettle of about 30 Turkey Vultures plus two Black Vultures was behind it much higher in the sky. The eagle eventually drifted off towards the northwest.
Amazingly this is my second record of a Golden Eagle from here, the first having been a very similar apparition also low and directly over the house almost exactly a year ago (12/04/2010). There is one other definite record I know of from Lewis County, a young bird photographed by tourists near the Natchez Trace parkway several years ago on Christmas Eve. I've had a few other reports from non-birding locals, but it is always hard to be sure of those. Interesting to note that my own personal eagle tallies from Lewis County (all flyovers at home) are now 3 Bald : 2 Golden.
