A puzzler...... During yesterday evening’s failing light (compounded by heavy, dark cloud cover) I was working in my yard when I heard an unexpected sound from above. When I looked up, I could see 18-22 geese flying in a northerly direction at a moderate-to-low height, but unfortunately I did not have my binoculars with me; and due to the poor light conditions, I couldn’t tell anything about their coloring (gray, white, bright pink.....couldn’t tell). What’s puzzling is their flight calls were not those of Canada Geese, but they sounded distinctly like Greater White-fronted Geese! Having only lived here a year now, is that possible in the Morristown area? I’ve perused several field guides, and it seems the GWFG range maps indicate this is unlikely, but not impossible. Their calls were goose-like, but higher pitched, more squeaky, and faster than the deep, smooth, lazy, sonorous honks of Canadas; they also didn’t seem to have the tooty, screaming, mono-syllabic calls of Snow Geese. Any inputs? Good Birding, Kirk Huffstater Morristown, TN 303-345-5020
