Nov. 18, 2007 Tunica Co. MS 18 miles south of Memphis. I was scouting a route for a raptor survey but the plan went out the window for two reasons. The first reason was there were too many raptors, 41 in first 7 miles and then I ran up on a Rough-legged Hawk. Q.B.Gray had given me a heads up on a bird he had seen in the area on Friday. I don't get the opportunity to study Rough-legged very often so I gave up the route and sat watching this stunning immature, light morph perched and hunting. I kept loosing the bird and it would show up in another area and I had told Gene Knight there might be two and much to my surprise, I ended with two kiting in my scope at the same time and shortly there after I had two perched and another immature light morph flying, all in the same field. I decided to leave to get something to eat and out on the gravel road, I saw a bird hunting the ditch line and heading in my direction. Low and behold it was an adult, dark morph Rough-legged, a morph I had never seen around here before. I feel lucky to get a single Rough-legged once every few years but 4, all within sight of each other and especially when the dark bird flies almost right over your head, what can I say, TLBA strikes again. I'll post photos as soon as I can. Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
