Birders, I need some help with this one. The last regular hummingbirds I saw at my feeders here near Norris (Anderson County) was on Oct. 5. There were all the regular R-T humms. that had been coming all summer, absent the mature males. Then, this past Fri. (Oct.16) a lone female appeared at one of my feeders and has been there regularly since. It appears, pretty clearly, to be a mature female *Archilochus. *It's most likely a Ruby-Throated, but several things argue for Black-Chinned. First, even in bright sunlight (today, PTL) the back is a dull green (nothing like the bright green RTs I saw all summer), and its head is dull grayish-green. There?s a pale grayish patch behind the eye. There is a pale buff wash on its flanks. The wings, which end just above the tip of the tail, are not clearly ?sharp pointed? or more rounded. Most-significantly, it flashes its tail *constantly* as it hovers. Is Black-Chinned out of the question? If not, is there any way of making this ID without the bird in hand? Thanks.
