Some of our visitors today to the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge in Meigs Co. at Birchwood were from Pennsylvania and New York, two states not previously noted since the hooded crane arrived. Visitors from 23 states, Ecuador, and Russia have now been at the refuge since Tuesday, December 13, when the hooded crane was first seen at HWR. At least 62 visitors were at the refuge today for a total of at least 616 since December 14 when the presence of the hooded crane was posted on this list serve. The hooded crane was in view early in the day, and it flew across the viewing area very late but did not light. One adult and one juvenile whooping crane were seen. The number of sandhill cranes appeared to be somewhat decreased from yesterday, but there were still at least many hundreds. Two pairs of bald eagles were seen on different trees on the far shore of the slough. Some visitors are having difficulty finding the HWR.
