Insane morning in our west Knox Co yard on Black Oak Ridge Sat morning. The
sprinkler, black gums, and muscadine were the centers of action. Highlights
below. 46 species total.
CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, 1, did not see rump but had great frontal view of strong
facial pattern with PALE lores, prominent malar and mustache, obvious median
stripe. BUFFY, not gray, underparts. All helping to rule out immature
Chipping. Flew in to top of neighbors' Bradford pear then eventually flew off
when I tried to go in for camera. Yard bird 173 and county bird
230-something... actually I think that's a state bird too.
2-3 dozen thrushes about evenly split between Swainsons and Gray-cheeked plus
one Wood. About a dozen were lined up at the sprinkler before dawn waiting for
me to turn it on. At one point had 7 GCTH in the sprinkler at once. Note that
these are daytime sightings not nocturnal flight calls. Really good mast of
black gum drupes and muscadine this year. I looked hard at all the GCTH but
couldn't find anything more exciting driven east by Matthew.
While looking at Pine and Blackburnian warbler in top of a hickory, an adult
BALD EAGLE flew threw my binocular field of view. It was that kind of morning.
Basically just randomly point binoculars into the woods and you'll see
something.
