Hi folks,

Yesterday, October 20, 2004, I spent a lot of time at Cades Cove.
First with high school kids from Cincinnati during the day, then I
led a park owl survey with high school kids from Austin East HS in
Knoxville.

The best bird was a DICKCISSEL that flew right over my head. I was
near the "increase fields" west of Hyatt Lane, where the park veg
crew are collecting seeds of native grasses and forbs. Two birds
flew right over my head as I was in the middle of a "quiet sit" with
the kids. The birds were no more than 15 feet off the ground. I
only looked at one. Saw all that yellow, and the black chest marks -
and it was certainly the wrong shape and size for EASTERN MEADOWLARk,
of which I saw at least 50.

During the day I saw 2 different NORTHERN HARRIERS, including a
gorgeous adult male, whom I flushed west of Hyatt Lane.

Sparrows are in, though I could only identify SONG, SAVANNAH, SWAMP,
WHITE-THROATED, FIELD and CHIPPING. Song accounted for nearly 90%.

There are still some PALM WARBLERS around.

Big miss for the day was we had no turkeys.

On the way back, we saw a hen RUFFED GROUSE along Tremont Road.

That night we were able to locate 6 EASTERN SCREECH-OWLS and one
large owl that was either Barred or Great-horned, but we had only a
brief look, and it never vocalized.

Charlie
