Houston Lane, Ooltewah (Chatanooga) 35.02 N, 85.08 W 4 PM Feb 5, 2003 A neighbor has a few grassy acres with a barbed-wire fence along the road. The wooden posts are rough and old. The past few days I have been seeing neat new holes in some of the posts, about 1.2 inches diameter, and opening down into the partly rotted center. Today a Brown-headed Nuthatch was perched on top of a post, singing his heart out, for 15 minutes or more, two different times. When I got a little closer the 2nd time, another one came out of the hole and flew up into a Cedar. Ah, Spring! We may get a late February nest. Also the nearby pond had a loud chorus of Peepers.
