I was driving down the steep hill from the Highland trailhead at Beaman
Park this morning around 8:50, and stopped to look at what I thought for a
moment was a crow flapping around just off the road, about mid-level in the
smallish trees there. Turned out to be a Broad-winged Hawk, which I take to
have been immature because of its relative lack of barring below. It stared
right at us for a few moments, then flew to a new perch, where it gave its
high-pitched two-note whistle several times.
