This weekend I stopped by some of the more productive ponds in Blount County. Unfortunately my results were no better than Dean had on the Knoxville CBC which includes most of these ponds. Phelps Dairy Pond had only a couple mallards. The "stilt pond" had a pair of Northern Shovellers and 5 Gadwall. The other pond (sorry, I forget the name, but it's usually the most productive) had no birds whatsoever. Not a surprise, since water only covers about 1/5 the surface area it did this time last year. The highly manicured pond on South Heritage Road had its usual Mute Swan and 5 Ring-necked Ducks. Ish Creek had nothing. Scenic Point had 4 Hooded Mergansers and about 25 Pied-billed Grebes. My Blount County list is a WHOPPING 57 birds so far. Yes, impressive, I know. :-) But the Purple Finches, lone White-crowned Sparrow and at least 2 different Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers in our yard keep us happy.
