TN-birders, Sharon Bostick, Frank Bills, Dollyann Myers and I had a fairly birdy day today (95 species) in Anderson County, working on the North American Migration Count (NAMC). We started out with a great find. This was a large grassy field with some scattered weeds at the northeast corner of exit 122 on I-75 north of Knoxville. This is where Fox Toyota is located. Go to the exit and go east until the first road to the left, only about 150 yards or so. This is the entrance to the Toyota dealership. Go left and instead of entering the car lot, go straight until the end (only about 75 more yards). There are a few trucks parked here. Just park here and stay to the right as far as you can so as not to hinder cars entering the maintenance area at the back of the dealership to the left. In the fields to the right and ahead (and right near the street as well) we found a total of 9 (yes, 9!) Grasshopper Sparrows. They were calling and flying all over the place, even sitting on the trucks and other equipment in the area. Looks like a great breeding area that is accessible to people. The land is for sale, so no telling how long this area will stay as it is, but maybe for a few years yet. Also in the field we found 11 Bobolinks. Then it was on to the Eagle Bend fish hatchery. It was one of the best shorebird days we’ve ever had there. Shorebirds included: Killdeer - 9 Semipalmated Plover – 8-10 Spotted SP – 10 Solitary SP – 10 Greater Yellowlegs – 1 Lesser Yellowlegs – 8 Semipalmated SP – 3 Least SP – 39 White-rumped SP – 1 Short-billed Dowitcher – 1 (in fantastic breeding plumage; gorgeous!!) Fun day! Great birding, Ron Hoff & Dollyann Myers Clinton, TN
