Had a VERY slow weekend of banding for migrants. This is absolutely the worst banding weekend for Labor Day I can remember (if there is such a thing as a bad day on a 5500 foot mountain in the wilderness of North Carolina/Tennessee!). I banded a good number of Juncos, but migrants were few and far between. I had hoped that The hurricane going up the coast might turn some normally coastal migrants inland. Instead, it seemed to hold them up altogether. Still waiting on the first big cold front I assume. It must be a lot like waiting on a big wave to surf at the beach! I only banded Tennessee's (2) and Black-throated Blues (3 I think). I did get to band a Least Flycatcher, I believe my first on the mountain, and a Brown Thrasher (hard to catch in the nets because of their strength and size). Also had one Redstart. I think all in all I banded less that 30 birds in three days. I felt like I was running a MAPS station rather than a migrant banding station. Anyway, it was a nice weekend on the mountain.
