On Saturday, February 4 I observed an active Bald Eagle nest in Gibson County in the Forked Deer River bottoms south of Gibson Wells-Humboldt Rd. and north of State Hwy. 152. A duck hunter that I work with had told me that they had been seeing two adult Bald Eagles bringing sticks to a nest in the area where they had been duck hunting. On Saturday evening we went to the area and I photographed the nest - the adult eagles were not present but I did have an immature Bald Eagle soaring high over the bottoms. On Sunday morning he went back and photographed the two adults sitting in the tree with the nest. He says that this nest was there last summer when they were working on their duck blind which means that this is at least the second year for this active nest. This is the first Bald Eagle nest that I know of for Gibson County. In the last year and a half I've had several sightings of eagles in the county including 2 sightings at my house which is about 7-8 miles (as the crow flies) from this nest site. I've heard rumors of another possible eagle nesting in the Forked Deer River bottoms near the Gibson County/Dyer County/Crockett County lines that I will try to confirm later.
