I heard this story from Dennis Young, my hairdresser.

He was walking in the woods on some private property near Bull Run Steam Plant
(near Oak Ridge). He had stopped to sit under a tree and rest when he saw a
hen turkey walking along the path. He remained still until the turkey had gone
around a bend in the trail, then got up quietly and followed it. When he came
around the bend of the trail, the turkey was still in front of him, but it
stopped and turned around. It gave him a piercing stare, then started coming
towards him. He started backing up, and when he had moved a few yards, the
turkey stopped and made a sort of thumping-clicking noise. Immediately there
was motion in the leaf litter, and at least 20 turkey chicks came out of hiding
and joined their mother. Apparently, he had gotten between the hen and her
chicks, and Dennis is not sure what she might have done if he hadn't moved.

Dennis says he thinks turkeys use deception like killdeers to lead intruders
away from their young. Maybe the turkey in my yard has a nest nearby?
