I was checking on a rookery on Percy Priest Lake this morning, in Rutherford Co., and found at least one pair of Anhinga! I was slowly paddling my kayak towards the island and I thought I initially saw 2 males flying off, which really caught me off guard. They circled quickly and disappeared. I couldn't dig my camera out of my dry bag fast enough. I then saw (and got a photo) of a female perched up high. I didn't see the birds associated with a nest, but I figured I'd take my time and ease around the island a couple times and see what I could see. Upon coming around the island I saw a female sitting on a nest. We watched each other for a minute and she flushed and disappeared (I wasn't that close as the great blues and cormorants didn't care I was there!). I went back to my truck to get my bigger camera lens and returned to the site to wait and see if they'd return (for photo documentation purposes). I waited about an hour near another island 300 yards away and hoped that they would return. I never saw the birds again. The female was clearly on the nest, but didn't come back within an hour in the brutal heat. This makes me think maybe she was laying an egg, which might be left unattended for longer periods of time (I think). I intend to get back to check on these birds in the coming weeks. Good birding!!
