Ken Oeser joined me for a bit of birding today, looking mainly for Lapland Longspurs. After first checking to see if the Black-necked Stilt was still there (it was), we made our way to Turns Rd. where we found Horned Larks and longspurs close to and on the road. We were able to count five longspurs at one time, and there were probably several more. From there we headed over to Ogg Rd. just off Hwy 41 and did even better. The field there was practically crawling with larks, many of them fairly close to the road. There were certainly 200 and possibly many more than that. Right away we heard a good number of longspurs rattling. Using his scope Ken counted 23 in the relatively small area where we were looking. We both felt there were easily twice that many in the entire field. A while later Ed Schneider came up to see the longspurs. By the time he arrived most of the birds had moved farther away from the road. Nonetheless, some of them eventually made their way into view and we got pretty good looks.
