I think the percentage is a little higher, but Gates/Ellison/etc own a
"limited partnership" stake in the VC firm. All they can do is buy/sell
their own shares, not influence the company. Their shares give them no
voting control over the VC firm.

This is not always what it seems- a lot of times the study is already
written and then presented to the sponsors who then choose to fund it.
Other
times, as with studies we have done, the vendor agrees to fund it
regardless
of the final result.
This is not nearly as suspect, for example, as the fact that 33% of Gartner
is now owned by a capital venture fund whose investors include Bill Gates
and Larry Ellison !!
