Shutting a server off does not clean up records of the Domain Controller
in WINS/DNS.
You could probably upgrade the server to 2000, run DCPROMO to take it
out of AD, and be set.
The server wich you assign the PDC Emulator role (FSMA) will
authenticate pre win2k klients.

Hello,
We are getting ready to upgrade our domain to AD 2k3 from AD 2000 in
mixed
mode. Right now we have 2 AD DC's and 1 NT 4.0 BDC. We run Exchange
5.5 on
NT 4.0. The problem we are having is that we want to take down the NT
4.0
BDC but we cannot because every time we shut it down, people can no
longer
get their mail from the Exchange server. We thought it might have been
because the mail server last authenticated to the NT 4.0 BDC so we shut
down
the NT 4.0 BDC and rebooted the mail server, but it still is not
working.
Any ideas??? People cannot get mail if we shut down the NT 4.0 BDC no
matter what we do???
