Mapped printers are retained in the users profile(s) - assuming you have some kind of persistent profiles. As to searching in AD - well by default it's assumed you would be using some subnet rationale, but you could search on some other criteria - although I'd suggest that the search interface isn't the most intuitive for normal users. However, if they know the printer name - then that's easily searchable via the printer applet. Anything more automated, and as always it's the rationale or algorithm that are the trickier things to define.
