Outlook 2000 will definitely redirect, Outlook 97 should as well, but I
didn't have any on 97 to know for sure.

Thanks everybody replied. I like your suggestion to build another server
and transfer everything online.

Is any MAPI client works this way (I mean redirect to a new server)? We
use mixture of outlook 97 and outlook 2000...

Gonna try it this weekend.

I've done *exactly* what you want to do. I kept the same version and
SP/Hotfix level of Exchange but moved to a Win2000 Server box, and I
used a box with a differnet now. In a nutshell:

1) Load new machine
2) Install Exchange and join it to your existing site
3) Move ALL mailboxes
4) Modify ALL your replication so everything replicates to this new
server in a site
5) Following the article for removing first Exchange server in a site
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;152959)
6) Once everything is replicated, TURN OFF your original server. Wait
at least a week and if no problems occur, you can delete it from
Exchange admin

Some gotchas:
1) OWA, make sure you set that up to point to new server
2) Outlook clients will auto-redirect the MAPI profile to the new
Exchange server as long as the original server is online. Don't shut
this down until this occurs or you will have to do it manually

This works very well. I did tis process twice in fact with no problems.
It lets you change your exchange server name, but not the site, which
shouldn't be an issue for you.

For step 4, I went through EVERY tab in Exchange admin and triple
checked that replication tabs all had both servers in them. Make sure
you change the HOME server of all your public folders as well. I
basically looked for anything that let me pickan Exchange server name
and changed it to my new server.

Subject: [THIN] OT: moving Exchange 5.5 to a new computer

Hi folks.

Merry Christmas everybody and enjoy the holiday season.

For those of you who stick around I have a question. I need to move my
Exchange 5.5 to a new computer. We are fairly small 1 server exchange
site (about 150 mailboxes (10Gb information store) but it is important
for us.
Unfortunately upgrade for E3K is not an option this year (keep my
fingers crossed for next year). I think about going per MS KB 155216
"How to move Exchange server to a new computer that has the same name".
Has anyone done this before? Any tips and tricks how to do it?

One more thing: current Exchange server resides on NT4 SP4 box and I
would really like to move it to W2K server. In that article MS says that
if destination computer doesn't match original by the OS verion or SP
level Exchange databases will be recalculated (but it will work). I know
Exchange
5.5 can be installed on W2K but will the move work?

Thanks for the input.
