[THIN] Re: OT: Identifying CPU By Stepping Level

A different stepping means different microcode on the CPU (what means
different ways of doing something, additional things, fixes etc). Many
CPUs do support upgrading this through a patch. This will change the
stepping number.

Thanks. This actually is pretty good. Unfortunately, I still don't
really have the information I'm looking for. I have a Proliant server
with the following CPU's listed in Computer Mgmt, System Summary:

X86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 4 GenuineIntel ~1933Mhz
X86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 7 GenuineIntel ~1933Mhz
X86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 7 GenuineIntel ~1933Mhz
X86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 4 GenuineIntel ~1933Mhz

I know this is 2 physical processors with hyperthreading, so the
question really was, what's the difference between Stepping 4 and
Stepping 7? All programs report that these are just Xeon's at 2 Ghz, but
clearly they're different. My curiosity is piqued because this system
generates Event ID 41, whose description is:

The CPUs in this multiprocessor system are not all the same revision
level. To use all processors the operating system restricts itself to
the features of the least capable processor in the system. Should
problems occur with this system, contact the CPU manufacturer to see if
this mix of processors is supported.

I have, in fact, contacted Compaq, who says this system does support
CPUs with different stepping levels. It's just a curiosity thing at this
point.

I should probably have mentioned that the demo I mentioned is
stand-alone exe that demonstrates itself by identifying everything you
need to know about your installed CPUs.
