For just E5.5 you don't need it... But if you want to Migrate to E2k =
then you will need to have it installed.

Joe,

now I'm a little confused. I run AD domain in mixed mode with Exchange =
5.5.
Why should I need ADC other then merging my Directories?

Thanks for the answer,

Pav

Joe,

Thanks for the clarification. I was trying to figure out a way to see if =
I
can install without ADC. You just answered my question.

You need the ADC regardless.

Vince, the ADC prefers Native Mode as it will convert the DLs to =3D =
Universal
Groups. Universal Groups are only supported in Native mode. =3D =
However, it
will work in mixed-mode, but there will be limitations (like =3D you =
can't
assign permission with the converted groups). You most likely =3D have =
to
delete them and recreate them as Global Groups.

ADC is for people who want to sync Exchange 5.5 Directory with Windows =
=3D
2000 Active Directory. IMHO it is better to upgrade to Exchange 2000 =
right =3D
away. Your Exchange 5.5 has it's own Directory service and Windows 2000 =
has
=3D its own too. I think you do not need ADC at all.

I was thinking about leaving it at mixed but according to the text about
ADC, I should at least have a native mode domain. Any comment?

Yes. If you demote your BDCs you can switch to native mode, but once =
=3D you
go native mode, you can't go back. So if you ever needed to an NT BDC =
for =3D
some reason, you'd be SOL. The extra benefits of native mode are few =
and
far between unless you have a rather large multi-domain setup (from what =
=3D
I've read). So I just leave it mixed "just in case".

Can I demote the bdc to a member server?

You can't go to native mode if you have any BDC's on your network still.

I think I finally got my Active Directory up and running but it is =3D =
running
in mixed mode. I still have 2 BDC running and one of the BDC is also
running Exchange 5.5. If I change my Domain controller to native mode, =
=3D am
I going to have any problem? I'm not too sure I understand the =3D
consequences of switching to full native mode.

Thanks for any advise

Vince
