[THIN] Login trouble for non-admin users on new farm

I'm in the process of configuring my new W2K3 / PS3 farm. The setup is
complex since it uses a modified form of flex profiles but I did think
everything was in hand. The system doesn't use mandatory profiles (we're a
mixed NT4 / 2000 domain org and flex profiles go a bit screwy in that
situation) but is instead setup to load the Default User profile for
everybody, with personal settings coming from flex profiles. At logoff, the
profile type is changed in the registry so that windows thinks it's a
mandatory profile and discards it. This has been working well throughout
testing.
However, when a "normal" user connects, they receive a message "Windows
cannot log you on because your profile cannot be loaded..... Detail -
Incorrect function", followed by session termination. If I add the user to
the Domain Admins group, they can login. I've checked permissions on the
\documents and settings\ folder and everywhere else I can think of. googling
hasn't come up with anything that appears relevant.
Can anyone suggest another place to look?
