While I won't begrudge that an XP workstation is certainly easier to setup/deploy in a corporate setting. BSD/Linux certainly do work in that capacity today. I use FreeBSD v4.9 everyday (and yes I use XP too) at home and at the office. In the Citrix world you can run a Windows app just as easily on an Open Source *NIX PC as a Windows PC. You get much better stability and security out of the box with BSD than XP. I am not a zealot like some in this arena. There are options and every now and again people entrenched in MS platform need to look at what's out there. If only to keep MS honest and competitive. >>> joe@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 12/9/2003 3:26:54 PM >>> SP1a cuts the number of patches by 20 or so, there is still another 20-25 to go. Funny you mention SP1a, it exists only because of a BS move to remove Java from Windows XP as Microsoft can't play nice with Sun. Nice. I'm simply saying that MS could/can do a better job. They can also roll-up the security patches more often. You'd think we'd have IE SP2 by now. Anyways, FreeBSD and Linux are nice but not Corporate Desktop ready. So no, people don't have a choice yet. Granted, it's getting close. This includes a lot of the security patches you would have to download individually via Windows update. It is however a 134MB download. http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.as p For differences between SP1 and SP1a http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813926 I am not at all keen on MS rushing untested or superficially tested service packs as the cure can be worse than the ill. p.s. Remember there is a choice on the desktop. You don't have to run MS at all. Check out FreeBSD or a Linux distribution like Redhat. >>> joe@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 12/09/03 12:05 PM >>> Microsoft security initiative is a Joke. As long as they treat it as a public relations issue it will never get fixed. Fwiw: I installed Win XP on another machine yesterday, after the base install it's Windows Update time. 45 "critical patches" let along the 25 in the "recommended" section. It takes longer to patch the OS now than it does to install and configure it. Also, what happened to the whole Roll up patch between Service Packs? Instead of 45 individual it would be nice to only need to download and deploy one file. Keep the individual patches for those who need them. I'd also say that MS is waiting too long between Service Packs. -----Original Message----- From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Jim Kenzig http://thethin.net Sent: Tuesday, December 09, 2003 8:19 AM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx; windows2000@xxxxxxxxxxxxx; nospam@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Discussion: Microsoft to release patches once per month Hi All, A colleague of mine went to a briefing at a local training center about using SUS server to deploy patches. I had told him about how Microsoft will be releasing bulletins and patches monthly and he brought it up to them. They knew nothing about it and the Microsoft rep that was there knew nothing about it also! So I thought to myself...who does know about it? Just to be certain that I wasn't dreaming when I saw this I went out to the Microsoft Security site and sure enough on the security home page is a link to Microsofts new patch release schedule and initiative. The link is: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/ bulletin/revsbwp.asp I find it very distressing that 1. A company that is trying to help someone with SUS/MOM etc can hold a seminar and not know this and 2. Microsoft's own people do not know it. Gotta love it.
