So basically Intuit's saying that QB sux as much as ever?

Anyway, adding the printer as a local IP printer is easy, either add
the IP port for the jetdirect, or if it's a printer physically
connected to a PC, then share the printer frm the PC, then on the
server add an IP port, use LPR instead of Raw, and then use the share
name of the printer for the queue name.

If the client isn't local and you're going through a FW with NAT, then
you're going to be performing port redirection in the FW, and however
the FW works combined with howmany public IP addresses that you have
will limit how many reirects that you're going to be able to have.
