256 colors isn't faster in this release of Metaframe. It is there
primarily more for legacy compatibility.  16 bit color is much more
optimized.  Make sure data compression and bitmap caching is enabled
on the client.  I would also experiment with turning Speedscreen on
the application you are using primarily.
