The Animal Inclination
The animal inclination is really gross. All it wants is physical
gratification. Like its name, the animal goes throughout its day looking
for things to lust. Because of this, there are a number of religions and
philosophies that say we are to kill our animal inclination, or that we are
to starve it, or beat it, as if with a club.
Instead of this, the Jewish path is to elevate the animal, to train it
to become a good animal. They say, a dog can become man’s best friend.
So, we say to the animal, “You want to eat? Fine, as long as it’s
kosher and healthy let’s go for it”
“You want to satisfy your lower impulse? Okay, first, we’ll get
married and then we will use that impulse for a holy purpose. We’ll make a
bunch of Jewish babies!”
On and on, whatever the animal wants we will try to find a holy way to
feed it.
