Intermarriage

     A young Jewish man wrote to me that his sister is about to marry a
gentile, and would I please talk to her so she won’t do it. I told him if
she wants to contact me, I will certainly try to help, but the chances of
an outsider (me) convincing a girl not to marry someone she loves is almost
zero, especially if I start the conversation.

     Obviously, the time to tell a Jewish boy or girl not to marry a
gentile is not a few weeks before the wedding. There has to be Jewish
education, especially if the family is not religious, or the children will
see absolutely no reason not to intermarry.

     There are so many good reasons why a Jew should marry only someone
whose mother is Jewish.

     The main one is: if it is a Jewish boy who is about to marry a
non-Jewish girl then he has to know that his children will not be Jews.

     If it is a Jewish girl about to marry a non-Jew then even though the
children will be Jews since their mother, i.e., the girl is a Jew, still,
the chances are almost certain that they will follow the spiritual beliefs
of the father, and by the time they go on to marry they will not even
consider themselves to be Jews.

     For 4000 years our ancestors have fought, and have even given up their
lives to maintain their families as Jews. Today, in America some 80% of the
non-Torah observant Jews are happily intermarrying.

     G-d help!
