Ethera didn't know how she knew things but she knew she'd never been wrong. She was thankful that there were no more feelings of pain or impending doom to disturb her sleep. She hoped the feelings were still right, that no more harm had befallen her friend Bella, and that she wasn't confused by the sense of security Mr. Wagner always gave her. She opened her eyes to find him laying propped up on her bunk, his head against the wall, fast asleep. She realized that whatever went on during the night, whatever woke her up terrified and shaking, must have made him feel the need to protect her. Well, I think my feelings are right but I'm glad he's here anyway. Ever so carefully, so as not to disturb him, Ethera slid out of the bunk. She grinned at Vanir. He was still out cold. He's very nice to me, she thought as she watched his slow, even breathing. I should do something to make him happy. Just what she could do eventually came to mind and she was still smiling as she headed toward the fresher room to start her morning. Finding himself in unfamiliar surroundings, Vanir awoke with a start. As he remembered the events of the previous night--his second encounter with Bella in Engineering, her injury at the hand of some madwoman, his visit to Sick Bay--he ran a hand over his face with a groan. "Oh, you're awake. Good." He turned to see Ethera standing in the doorway, smiling brightly and carrying a mug toward him. He returned her smile wholeheartedly but he couldn't help but notice that something was different. He couldn't pin it down exactly but the girl looked...different. Ach, you're tired and seeing things, he thought, brushing off his imaginings as cobwebs from sleep. "Good morning, liebling," he said, still smiling. "What is this?" "This is what you always drink in the morning so I got you a cup," she stated. "Did I get it right?" "Perfectly," Vanir replied after taking a sip from the mug. "Now, what have you been doing while I was being very rude by making you sleep so uncomfortably?" "I wasn't uncomfortable. I used to do the same with...somebody," the girl said softly, recalling that person's image but not much else. "And, I've been studying. Do you want to see? I'll show you the PADD." "Sure, come show me," Vanir said, holding out his hand. I'm seeing things. She looks like she's grown three inches overnight. Drink the coffee, fool. You're just imagining things because you're tired. He was still sitting on the edge of the bunk as he sipped the strong, sweet coffee and reviewed the PADD. He looked at her through pale indigo lashes. Incredible...so much progress overnight. "Ethera, liebchen, this is wonderful. I am very impressed." The girl fairly glowed with pride and shyly said, "I think your real students are very lucky to have such a good teacher, Mr. Wagner." "No, no--you are a very good student and I am very proud of you," he told her. He put the PADD down and held out an arm, beckoning her closer. The child sat on his knee and he put the arm around her. "Now, listen very carefully, Ethera. I have no idea what happened last night but I don't like the idea of you being out and about on your own. Not for now, in any case. I want you to come with me to Engineering." "Can I help you?" Ethera asked hopefully. "Absolutely."
