The Packery Channel Surbird was present as of early this afternoon, and was observed from the south jetty, and then flew to the north jetty. It would probably be best to check the south jetty first, since that seems to be where the bird spends most of its time. Here are the directions to the south jetty.. Take South Padre Island Drive (TX 358) east and where 358 branches off continue on Park Rd 22 east to Padre Island. Once you are on the island, take a left at the second stop light (Whitecap Dr) and then take a left on Windward. Go to the end of Windward and go left on St. Bartholomew and then right on a sand road to the beach. Follow the beach north to the south jetty. Directions to the north jetty..... Using the above directions, instead turn left at the FIRST stoplight which is Hwy 361 (Commodores Rd.) go across the Packery Channel bridge, and turn right shortly at Zahn Avenue, which leads to the beach and the north jetty. This bird has tied the record for longest-staying Surfbird in Texas with a stay of (at least) nine days. The previous longest-stayer was the bird found on the Port Aransas south jetty, and was present from May1-9, 2009.
