Sorry for the late post, but since we have no "official" Spring Hawkwatch
here in Corpus Christi, I want to get this bit of info on the "record".
Yesterday morning(03/28), I received a text from good Friend Mary King. Mary
was at Polywog Ponds, and was seeing numerous Hawks. I headed for the Ponds
and Bam! Broad-winged Hawks everywhere. Broad-winged Hawks getting up from
Polywog, Broad-winged Hawks East, West, North, and South. A conservative
estimate of 2,500 to 3,000 liftoff Broad-winged Hawks - a decent number of
which were directly overhead. Mary informed me that it was her first
liftoff, and I am so very thrilled that she shared...
Also, male Hooded Warbler, and a sharp Yellow-rumped Warbler(Myrtle)nearly
dressed for the prom...
An awesome morning - thanks for the heads up Mary!

All birds reported? Yes
Comments:
The five folks who went on this hike ranged from novices to a fair amount of
experience. For the first time this year Western Scrub-jays were vocal and
active. Going up the JJR trail we ran into a group of returning runners. One
of them is an experienced Golden-cheeked Warbler surveyer. She said she had
heard a number of GCWA s during her group's run. Maybe 8:30 was too late to
stsrt? Except that in previous years I have had Golden-cheeks calling at 2
o'clock in the afternoon. The next bird hike at Government Canyon State
Natural Area will be on April 24. This should be the start of bunting
season. In June Painted Bunting songs drown out the ubiquitous Northern
Cardinal singing. Onwards! Steve Stevan Hawkins San Antonio Tx Submitted

Spotted the very dark, 1st-year Heerman's Gull about 12:50pm today at the
fish-cleaning station next to the first (westernmost) boat ramp on the north
side of the Texas City Dike. Dark gray overall with black terminal tail
band, therefore a 1st-yr bird. Base of bill dark red. Slightly larger and
much quieter than the surrounding flock of Laughing, Herring, and
Ring-billed Gulls.
Before today, I'd only seen HEEGs in California.

Subject: [texbirds] Male Vermilion Flycatcher at Lake McClellan (SW corner)
Date: Tue, 29 Mar 2016 18:06:45 +0000
Hello all:
On this late, overcast and windy morning (at around 10:15 am), I briefly
cruised by Lake McClellan after entering the National Grassland from the NW.
After stopping to scan the lake from between the large group shelter and
McClellan campground, I came across a gorgeous adult male Vermilion
Flycatcher sallying in the tallest stand of trees. Unfortunately, I didn't
have my camera with me but there was no mistaking the bird. Also, of note, I
had calling Sora and Virginia Rails below the dam on the NE side of the
lake, and scattered all across the lake were loads of waterfowl, at least 15
species.
Here are the coordinates to the VEFL: 35.212718, -100.873443
