take place. A cold front with associated low pressure areas are forecast to
start generating thunderstorms, some severe, over the weekend. It doesn't
take NEXRAD to expect a pretty good display of migrants over the next few
days. On the other hand NEXRAD can help to understand the relationship
between migrating birds and weather.

All stations are showing what appears to be a light flight of incoming
trans-Gulf migrants. The Houston and Lake Charles images show was looks
like the beginnings of a "doughnut" signature, an indication that birds are
overflying the NEXRAD station. A closer look at the Houston imagery (see
TEXBIRDS Facebook page) makes me think that the majority of the "bird"
targets are in fact insects. Note the beaded appearance visible especially
to the west northwest of the image and the fact that the air above Trinity
Bay is totally clear. Would birds that just completed a trans-oceanic
flight be adverse to flying over a 20 mile wide bay? Maybe, but I am
dubious.
