[texbirds] Whooping Cranes

All of the radio tracked Whooping Cranes in the Aransas - Wood Buffalo
National Park flock are now in Texas. Last week, there were a few
Whooping Cranes still being reported north of the state, but I have not
received an update on their status this week.
This year, because of the large number of Whooping Cranes that spent the
2011 - 2012 winter outside the Aransas area, Texas Parks and Wildlife
introduced a Winter Whooper Watch to try to gather more information on
the cranes that are wintering outside Aransas and what habitat variables
they are using. We could use the help of any birders that observe
Whooping Cranes in their activities.
Two ways you can help. First, any time you see a Whooping Crane outside
the immediate surroundings of Aransas National Wildlife Refuge /
Rockport, we would welcome a formal record of that bird(s) to add to our
database. Forms making this easy can be found at

which can be emailed to whoopingcranes@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. You can also
send email directly to mark.klym@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx with information about
the birds, although we are likely to ask for the form to be filled out
as well.
If you are repeatedly visiting an area where Whooping Cranes are being
seen outside of the immediate Aransas area, you may be interested in a
behavior monitoring project. More information on this project and the
