As Mary mentioned, this proposed listing for a population segment, nit a taxonomic unit. There is no difference between the birds on the western Hill Country and in the Trans-Pecos in morphology or voice. I suspect there are very minimal difference with the overall population of Yellow-billed Cuckoos from the extreme eastern portion of North America and those in the Southwest, but those differences are not currently considered sufficient for there to be more than one subspecies. At one time the birds in the Southwest were included in a separate subspecies. The current taxonomy follows work by Duck Banks. For those interested in reading the paper it can be accessed at SORA (http://sora.unm.edu/). Banks, R. C. 1988. Geographic variation in the Yellow-billed Cuckoo. Condor 90:473-477.
