Veena Mohan and I spent the morning birding the prairies and woods around
Thrall in southeastern Williamson County.  We had several seasonal firsts
(Swainson's Thrush, Indigo Buntings, Dickcissels).  However, one of the big
highlights was a single Black-necked Stilt in a field with sheet water on the
Brushy Creek floodplain (viewed to the north from CR438 about a mile east of
its intersection with 112).  Even with a scope, viewing this sheet water is
difficult.  Several other shorebirds were present, but I could only ID the
larger ones (dowitchers and yellowlegs).  The other big highlight was
ridiculous numbers of Grasshopper Sparrows.  Some were present on CR424 north
and south of Thrall, but the bonanza was along CR435.  Many were perched on
the fence posts/lines along the road and allowed fairly close approach and nice
photo opportunities.  Our full list from the morning is pasted in below. Rich
