Greetings All:
I realize that I am a little late in getting this summary of my 2013 game out
... but May has been a busy, busy month - what with patch birding, adding two
more counties to my TCC list, and documenting a whole bunch of butterfly
records for Hood County.

This goal of this year's game is to see how many butterflies, amphibians,
reptiles, birds, and mammals I can see in my 'patch': a circle, with a
radius of 7.5 miles, centered on the intersection of Quaker Avenue and
34th Street in Lubbock, Texas.  All of Lubbock's in-town playas, the
entire run of the Canyon Lakes of Lubbock, and a lot of urban/suburban
parks are in my patch with some agricultural/prairie patches around the
periphery.  I don't quite get Buffalo Springs Lake or City Farms to the
east but I do get almost to Reese Center to the west.  I decided to set my
goals high - failure is definitely an
option: 50 species of butterfly, 5 species of amphibian, 10 species of
reptile, 250 species of bird, and 15 species of mammal by the end of
2013.

The fourth month saw visits to the Canyon Lakes and the in-town playas of
Lubbock ... and to the just-barely-in-my-patch playa at Reese Center.   The
riparian area below Lake Six, Lake Six itself, the Purina Mountain Bike Trail,
and Clapp Park were the places to be.

The following list includes all critters (25 butterfly, 1 amphibian, 8
reptile, 154 bird, 11 mammal species) seen in my patch during the
month.  By the end of April I was up to 29 species of butterfly, 1 species of
amphibian, 9
species of reptile, 201 species of bird, and 14 species of mammal in my
patch for the year.  Species that were new to the list for the year are
indicated with an *.
