Rich Kostecke ended May with 133 species of bird at Devine Lake and, with
only one visit to a still flooded to the site during June, added nothing to
his total, leaving him at 133 species at the end of June.
Anthony Hewetson ended May with 137 species of bird at Clapp Park and
several visits to the still-flooded site during June yielded only three
additions - Common Nighthawk, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, and Brown-headed
Cowbird, bringing him up to 140 species at the site by the end of June.
This slow-down was to be expected as June, with almost nothing in the way
of migration going on and most year-round residents already tallied, is
hard going. July, if conditions continue to dry down a bit, should bring
some new shorebirds to both sites and there is always fall migration to
look forward to.
