Count me in as one of those who care! As a book author, an eBird reviewer, an NAB subregional editor, and simply a curious observer of bird distribution, I care. Texas is quite fortunate to have a premier bird records committee. I spend much time reviewing hundreds of thousands of bird sighting reports for Belize, a country without a functioning records committee. Only Lee Jones and I review records and it would be beneficial to have a committee of authorities to add their weight to whether a species actually occurs in the country or not. Although I maintain we have 595 species that have occurred in the country, I am not sure. Even the information put out by AOU is inconclusive on the distribution of species in regard to Belize. If a visitor to Belize reports a Great Potoo, but Northern Potoo is common, should it be believed? Bird record committees help answer that type of question in Texas, but not in Belize. I ask the same question that I have often asked of California Rare Bird Committee members. Who cares? So what? Or, putting it a little more scientifically, who will subsequently use the committee's decision, and to what end? ...
