Our Wednesday bird walks continue through the summer beginning at 8:00 a.m. We
have had exceptional attendance for summer walks with 11 intrepid souls this
past Wednesday. They found 36 species highlighted by 4 Swallow-tailed Kites at
one time. At least 2 were adults and at least one was a shorter tailed
immature. The 4th bird was not seen long enough or well enough to determine if
it was a second youngster. Some of the kites hung around for about 10 minutes.
From our hawk tower the group had 10 hawks of 5 species. Kendra Kocab had
observed one Swallow-tailed Kite over Mueschke Road on June We had two
encounters on May bird walks leading us to suspect a nesting pair nearby. This
past Wednesday's observation of a family group seems to confirm those
suspicions. Other birds observed on the walk included Brown-headed Nuthatch and
Scaly-breasted Munia.
