Greetings All: I spent six hours patch birding this morning/afternoon and stumbled across a few goodies. At Hillcrest Golf Course - visible from the dirt road along the southern edge - 2 Canvasbacks and 8 Redheads. Along FM 2641 - both near the intersection with Avenue Q where it becomes Avenue P - 1 Rough-legged Hawk and 1 Mountain Bluebird. At the southern end of the Lubbock Country Club neighborhood - 1 Brown Thrasher. At the upper end of MacKenzie Park - 2 White-breasted Nuthatches and 1 Eastern Bluebird. At the lower end of MacKenzie Park - 1 Eared Grebe, 1 Wilson's Snipe, 1 Downy Woodpecker, 1 Eastern Phoebe, 1 House Wren. Also a great look at an American Beaver swimming upstream from the lake into the river portion of the park - making sense of the chewed trees along the river. Along East 19th Street just east of the loop - 1 Greater Yellowlegs in flight, 17 Long-billed Curlews, and 1 Burrowing Owl. Just below Lake Six - 1 Red-shouldered Hawk. At Lake Six - 1 female Common Merganser and 2 Common Gallinules. At Mae Simmons Park - 2 Common Gallinules and 1 Common Yellowthroat. Also - and this is pretty amazing for February - a double digits species count for butterflies: Common Checkered Skipper, Checkered White, Orange Sulphur, Sleepy Orange, Dainty Sulphur, Gray Hairstreak, Question Mark, Mourning Cloak, Red Admiral, and Painted Lady.
