Excellent subject/thread! I'm always into the "stuff" we use...have lists of
others' ideas...always so helpful.

What I take:Snake Guardz or chaps (depending on how deep the brush is I intend
to wade into)Bug repellent wipes (I wear a long-sleeved shirt which is sprayed
with Deet, as are my pants; both shirt and pants are dedicated for this)3
Bandanas - one to spray with Deet and put around my neck, one for my pocket and
one for the fanny pack/vest.Pant leg "keepers" (wraps around pants legs at
ankles to seal the openings; made with velcro)
(Can you see from all the above that I am adamantly anti-bug and critter using
me for a meal????)
Smooth hard leather hiking bootsHat/visorFlip-up sunglasses on my
glassesExpandable/collapsible metal walking stick (helpful with brush and
snakes too)
Fanny pack or pocketed vest with: cell phone, pepper spray (have encountered
packs of dogs while out & about), extra camera batts and data cards, water,
snack, small binocs, small notebook and pencil, ID, marking tape, small
first-aid kit, camera, folding Buck knife, small flashlight, whistle, lip balm,
sunscreen wipes
In my truck: ref books. When I am back to the truck after hiking, I immediately
use my books and my field notes to confirm IDs.

I also freeze wet washcloths, then put them in a small cooler in the truck.
They are still cold/cool when I return, and are so refreshing for the face and
arms after a trek. I freeze half-bottles of water too, then fill with liquid
water and put in same cooler. That, too is refreshing...a cold/cool drink
afterwards.
Neither my phone nor my camera are 'high-tech'...I still use a basic flip-phone
and my camera is a Fuji point and shoot. Budget constraints have kept it this
way, and lack of sophisticated equipment keeps me on the lower rung of birders.
But...there's a silver lining: no lenses to take and keep track of, no fumbling
around with phone or camera settings/apps...just a straight-forward trek, using
my eyes and ears to make note of what I observe, and capturing some not-so-good
photos along the way. Not ideal for any major contribution to the birding
community, but since I "bird" out of an interest in Nature, it's ok with me.
