Saturday is the date of the annual Smith Point Volunteer Fire Department
Oyster and Fish Fry
Its a great opportunity to see some hawks, other migrant birds and have
great local seafood cooked very well. The event also has an auction that
can have interesting local goodies oriented to the outdoor people. The
oysters and fish are hot from the fryer and the side dishes are good too.
And you will not complain about not having enough to eat. Beverages can be
purchased or bring your own.
And there is a bake sale of very good home made desserts.
All for a reasonable price that helps a good cause. And it is good to have
a great fire department almost next door as the hawk watch tower is made of
wood and located in a brushy area that is not always mowed.
The food is indoors now so you can no longer watch kites and olive-sided
flycatchers as you eat but it also works if there is rain.
And you can always take it with you for a picnic at the park for waterbirds
or back at the tower.
If you do eat at the tower, please take the containers etc home with you as
there is no facility at Candy Abshier for trash.
The doors are open from 11 am to 2 pm.
The hawks are a little slow getting up in the morning except for accipiters
and kites so you could stop at Anahuac or such on the way, get down to
smith point about 9 for the birds, eat and then come back to the tower for
more hawks and a nap.
Great way to start a holiday weekend.
