I started the day going down backridge road and had some scaup on the ponds. The light got better on the way out and one clump of 4 birds illustrated male and female of greater and lesser. They did not pose quite right but the size, color and head shape shows well http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072677 American avocets in the state park are starting to get spring colors. http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072678 There were a good number of American bitterns along the road. Early they were not real conspicuous against the green http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072679 But after the sun came out they stood out more http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072680 This bird had a better idea of how to take cover http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072681 A single golden plover was feeding in the parking lot at the state park marsh unit http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072725 It dug down into the grass and was catching little black caterpillar type things http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072713 It apparently say something before digging in but I looked and found nothing. The critters were commoner around the edge http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072724 No sign of gold feathers on the bird http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072714 http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072719 A blue jay was digging in near the woods entrance and ignored people http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072737 They use roots in the nest but this bird gathered roots and dumped them http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072740 There were 2 flocks of northern parulas moving around http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072744 One flock spent a lot of time on the ground http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072743 I only saw a single prothonotary warbler that stopped for a quick bath http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072745 A yellow-throated vireo showed off its yellow throat http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072750 It spent a lot of time peering for bugs but did not seem to find any. The willows were not far enough along to have worms yet http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072751 http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072748 The warbler of the day was male hooded. I did not see any females http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072839 http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072838 Great looks at them http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072835 The yellow legs on the Louisiana waterthrush showed up well http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072843 And they do show their clear throats at times compared to the stripy throats on northerns http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072842 The long eye line even shows from the rear http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072841 The chink call is different from the northern too as seen here http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/155072840 Lots more warblers and plovers can be browsed at http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/inbox -- Joseph C.
