I've been a winter volunteer for five years. Recently we observed a nesting
Common Pauraque with hatched chicks. This is a good example of the pros and
cons of this discussion. It is an absolute joyous experience to see the chicks
pop out from the adult's breast. But when the news got out, other visitors
stomped down and moved brush to clear the sight line for better photos, used
flash photography in daylight as well as dusk, and set up too close. The result
was the bird family was disturbed and flushed several times, moved to new
locations and farther back into the cover. These birds are not endangered but
they deserve respect. I truly enjoy sharing such remarkable experiences with
visitors who are equally amazed and grateful for such a unique viewing. But it
always comes with the fear that they will come back later or tell/show someone
else who does not have the same appreciation or values. A few inconsiderate
people can ruin a wonderful outdoor adventure for many. So does the benefit to
the many override the risk to the bird by the buttheads?
