All -

As an FYI, the Audubon Shop in Madison, CT will separate out plates from text
and spiral-bind just about any book. I had that done for the Ecuador book.
The back cover had an index for the plates, too. The plates went in the van
with me and the text stayed back at the room.

One of the fellows on our trip had done the same thing himself, but he had no
index, and his binding job started to come apart.

I did the same thing as Bert with a copy of Howell & Webb. Unfortunately, that
method does not hold up well in the field (at least for me!), so I started
carrying van Perlo's book in the field. Serves me sufficiently well, although
I agree with Bert about the weak descriptions.

Steve,
I have traveled in Mexico and Central America by RV, so I had the
luxury of carrying several Mexico bird books. Peterson's book is too dated.
Edwards
book has too many errors. I have van Perlo's book too, but it
includes too many species and too little description. The only one I
used regularly is Howell & Webb. Actually, I had two copies, one
bound as delivered, and the second one split into 3 parts, the center
part being the plates only, then rebound in a spiral format at a copy
store. That is usually the one I carried in the field as it was light and
easy to pack.

TexBirders:
This past Thursday the person working customer service at my local
Barnes & Noble did a search for "Peterson's Field Guide to the Birds
of Texas", 1960, and "Peterson's Field Guide to the Birds of Mexico",
1973. Both are now out of print. In their time they were valuable resources
and tools.

When out-of-staters ask me about which field guide(s) to get before
they bird the US-Mexico borderlands, I always tell them to bring a
North American field guide of their choosing and "Peterson, Mexico".
Other than Howell and Webb(which is kind of expensive, large, and
heavy), is there a field guide to the birds of Mexico that I can
recommend to people wanting to bird the US-Mexico borderlands?

Thanks!

Steve
