Yesterday early afternoon when the clouds began to break and let a little sun through an adult Broad-winged Hawk appeared over my home in central-west Austin. It did not act like a migrant, proceeding to dive and swoop all over what I can see of the sky for about two hours. What I saw looked like territorial advertising. I believe that this may be one of the pair (probably the male) that nested somewhere in the neighborhood last year. Nesting Broad-wings are quite uncommon as far west as Austin, therefore my interest and this note. Last year they fledged a single juvenile which often called attention to itself by food-begging calls. I hope they do as well this year. jca John C.
